Sierra remains an option should you wish to consider it: Download Sierra from the Mac App Store. The above procedure is equally applicable to Sierra as well as High Sierra. Some apps that require a macOS later than Mavericks might not work with High Sierra. The only way to be certain is to try it yourself. That's one reason I provided that User Tip.

I went to my local macstore recently and was told that I should NOT update to High Sierra, that it would work poorly with my mid 2012 macbook pro.
Perhaps you should inform those so-called Geniuses that High Sierra runs perfectly on all my Macs, including a 2012 MBP and Macs even older than that.
